Swiilawiid Logo
Swiilawiid Sustainability Society is a small grassroots non-profit on Haida Gwaii that is advocating for renewable energy on Haida Gwaii as a way of promoting and protecting social and environmental diversity on the archipelago. Although there are island innovators who have explored renewable energy options, currently diesel powers the majority of the grid on Haida Gwaii. Swiilawiid is hoping to change that with their Project 0% Diesel.
The name of the society is inspired by the swiilawiid (Pine Grosbeak Pinicola enucleator carlottae), a distinct subspecies of song bird on Haida Gwaii that is often found chattering quietly in flocks in forests around beaches. Swiilawiid is the X̱aayda kil (southern Haida dialect) word for the Pine Grosbeak, Red Crossbill, and Hermit Thrush.
I hand drew the swiilawiids and then created two versions of the logo in Photoshop and Illustrator.
